Fire and Gas Detection

Fire and Gas Detection

Tank fires, while rare, represent a significant threat due to the amount of fuel each tank contains.

Storage tank fires are often caused by static electricity from fuel being loaded or unloaded from the tank too quickly or from lightning strikes. In Alberta, lightning strike frequency can average one strike/square kilometer per year in many industrial areas. Fires often occur at the flexible seal between the floating roof and the side of the tank.

Fires often occur at the flexible seal between the floating roof and the side of the tank.

A flame detector is the ideal solution for this challenge as it is extremely false alarm resistant and has the ability to detect a small 1ft x 1ft fire from over 200 feet away. Traditional point detectors are not practical for covering large areas, fence line monitoring, or for monitoring gas leaks that are crossing from one area of the plant to another. Open path detectors such as Infrared Gas Detectors are uniquely suited for these applications. We offer open path solutions for mixed hydrocarbon gases or pure methane, toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), ammonia, carbon dioxide (CO2), and hydrogen fluoride (HF) or combinations of toxic gases and hydrocarbons in the same detector.

Pressure Management

Pressure Management

Large storage tanks can change volume, level, and pressure very quickly as the fluids are pumped and as weather changes, causing expansion and contraction.

The ability to protect the assets with low pressure or vacuum settings without releasing gas or liquids to the atmosphere is essential to safe operations.

Our team provides overpressure protection solutions and supports various products with local inventory, factory support, repair services, and application expertise.

A combination of pressure vacuum relief, emergency relief valves, and flame arrestors will protect your assets safely and efficiently. With our proven experience, we have the right pressure relief valve for your most demanding applications. You can be confident that you have local service and support knowledge whenever, and wherever you need it.

Inventory Tank Gauging

Inventory Tank Gauging

Tank gauging systems are critical to the successful operation of a storage terminal.

They are required for accurately measuring product for custody transfer and inventory control.

While product is closely measured coming into a terminal and again when it is returned to a pipeline, the ability to have real-time information on all tanks can improve terminal balancing and reduce costs associated with blending and enhancing operations.

Over blending of high cost blend fluids, such as condensate, to reduce the density and viscosity of crude oil can contribute to a significant portion of a facility's operating costs.

Over blending of high cost blend fluids, such as condensate, to reduce the density and viscosity of crude oil can contribute to a significant portion of a facility's operating costs.

Blending skids are intended to reduce operating costs and meet delivery point contract requirements or crude oil standards required by receipt point pipelines.

Emerson's Micro Motion Coriolis technology provides custody transfer accuracy of flow and density from a single device.

Density measurement is commonly used in the blending process to meet a specific density target of the two blended fluids with the end goal of maintaining a very tight accuracy of blend to minimize blending costs. The Micro Motion Viscometer can be used when the facility is blending to a defined maximum viscosity in order to meet delivery point and/or pipeline process fluid quality standards.

Manifold Isolation

Manifold Isolation

At a terminal facility, storage tanks require a network of piping connections to control fluid flow around the tank farm.

Correct valve selection is important to isolate fluid product inside the tank as part of normal operations. These tank isolation shut-off valves must provide zero-leakage capability to prevent any harm to workers and the environment.

Our isolation valve solutions offer many options for from both manual and actuated control valve packages.

We can provide a variety of valve options including high integrity Omni expanding plug valves, Orion compact expanding wedge gate valves, and Emerson KTM Virgo Series ball valves suitable for product isolation. Our Emerson EIM electric actuated valve package is designed specifically for your process to minimize downtime and provide a safe and reliable system.
